What are some tips for choosing a desk lamp?

1. Color temperature

The color temperature of the lamp determines the softness of the light. Neither excessively high nor excessively low color temperatures are ideal; a range of 4000K to 5200K is relatively suitable. Among them, eye-protection lamps with a color temperature of 4000K to 4500K produce slightly reddish and softer light, making them suitable for primary school students. A color temperature of 4500K to 5200K is suitable for middle school students and older users.

2. Illumination height

Illumination height refers to the distance between the lamp and the desktop. National requirements specify that this distance should be greater than 40 cm. When an eye-protection lamp is positioned less than 40 cm above the desktop, the height of the human eye is above the lamp, and the eyes see a bright area and a dark area. This alternating bright-and-dark lighting environment has a significant impact on vision.

3. Lampshade material

National regulations require eye-protection lamp shades to be made of translucent materials. Translucent materials direct part of the light into the dark area above the lamp, preventing excessively strong bright-and-dark divisions throughout the lighting environment and thereby helping protect the eyes. At present, many eye-protection lamps still use opaque materials or recycled materials coated with paint as lampshades. Over time, toxins may decompose into the air, posing a risk to human health.

Power and luminous flux

When a desk lamp has low power, the light illuminating the book is too dim, making it difficult for the eyes to see the text clearly and easily causing eye fatigue and myopia. Generally speaking, the power should be at least 16 watts. However, the bulb wattage should not be too high either, as excessively strong light can reflect from the white paper into the eyes, causing glare and keeping the pupils continuously constricted, which may lead to eye pain and headaches. The brightness of a 25-watt to 45-watt incandescent lamp is most suitable. In terms of luminous flux, it should be greater than 1200lm. Some inferior products have high power, but their luminous flux does not meet the required standard.

4. Glare

Glare is easy to identify. Any lamp tube that is directly exposed or covered only with a transparent plate will produce glare, and when sitting at a desk and looking straight ahead or slightly upward, the light can easily cause discomfort or injury to the eyes.

Finally, try to avoid using colored bulbs. Scientific research has confirmed that vision is best in a white-light environment. Therefore, when making a selection, it is best to choose an incandescent lamp, frosted lamp, or LED lamp that emits soft and uniform white light rather than a colored light source.
